By Peggy Arthur

Greetings, readers, writers, and everyone in between.
There’s something both exhilarating and disorienting about standing this close to the end of a book.
Right now, I’m deep in the rewrite of Chapter 12 which is my Frankenstein chapter.
It’s a careful stitching together of old material and new insight, pulling from what once worked while reshaping it into something stronger, more intentional, and more aligned with the story as it stands today. It’s not quite resurrection, not quite reinvention, but somewhere in between.
And then comes Chapter 13, which will be entirely new.
A fresh breath in a story that has been lived in, broken apart, and rebuilt piece by piece.
After that, I move into refining the end of the book.
Yes. The end of the book.
I’m not sure there’s a clean way to describe how that feels. There’s pride, relief, excitement, and a strange emotional lag, as if my mind hasn’t quite caught up with what my hands have already done.
For the past few months, I’ve been immersed in revising a substantial portion of this manuscript: reworking key chapters, strengthening character arcs, and reshaping the story into something more cohesive and intentional.
And now, suddenly, I’m here.
My original goal was to finish this rewrite by the end of last month. That didn’t happen. The deadline has since moved to the end of this month, and while it feels daunting, I’m still committed to seeing it through.
The good news? I won’t need to rebuild everything from scratch. It looks like I’ll be able to keep most of the ending and focus my efforts on the Epilogue setting up Book 2 of The Pretender’s Game.
That feels like a reward.
A quiet confirmation that some parts of this story have always been exactly what they needed to be.
Because even if I don’t have every deliverable ready, the updated beat sheet, revised blurb, or new synopsis, I am determined to have something even more important:
A complete book.
A full manuscript that I have read from beginning to end. A story that feels whole in both my hands and my heart. Something I can stand behind as I prepare to package it properly for my editor, and eventually, for you.
This phase isn’t about perfection.
It’s about completion. Coherence. Finally being able to step back and see the story not in fragments, but as a whole.
And maybe that’s the real milestone.
Not just finishing chapters, but finishing the experience of the book itself.
So here we are.
One Frankenstein chapter. One brand-new chapter. One final stretch that feels equal parts uncertain and inevitable.
Let’s see this through.
