Greetings, readers, writers, and everyone in between.

I hope you’ve had a great week.

Originally, I planned to share a post about deepening your characters; rounding them out and layering in emotion. But this week, I felt pulled in a different direction. I want to talk about something real. Something many of us experience but don’t always say out loud: isolation.

Over the past few months, I’ve intentionally stepped into a season of isolation so that I could create. As writers, we know how difficult it can be to hear our own thoughts when we’re surrounded by constant noise, other people’s voices, expectations, and energy. Sometimes, the only way to truly access our creativity is to step away from it all.

So we isolate.

We do it to hear our thoughts more clearly.

To feel what our characters feel.

To build worlds without interruption.

And for a time, that isolation serves us well.

But here’s what I’ve realized: isolation is a tool. It’s not a destination.

There comes a moment when connection becomes just as necessary as solitude. A moment when we need to step back into community to be inspired, challenged, educated, and reminded that we are not creating in a vacuum.

I reached that moment this week.

I attended a local writer’s den, and I am so glad that I did.

When I first arrived, I’ll be honest, I wanted to retreat to a small, two-person table and quietly claim both seats as my own. Laptop open. Head down. Invisible.

But instead, I made a different choice.

I joined a large, family-style table filled with other writers and they welcomed me.

The structure was simple:

The first hour was dedicated to working on your own project.

The second hour was for networking and conversation.

And that second hour? I truly enjoyed it.

It gave me the opportunity to connect with other authors writing in fiction and fantasy; some even exploring similar themes and ideas as my own. That alone amazed me. To hear others speak about concepts that have been living quietly in my mind reminded me that creativity is both deeply personal and beautifully collective.

We may write alone, but we are not alone.

This experience reminded me that while isolation helps us create, connection helps us grow.

So if you’ve been tucked away in your own creative bubble for a while, consider this your gentle nudge: step out, even just a little. Find your people. Sit at the bigger table.

You never know what inspiration, or affirmation, is waiting there.
