Ten Years in the Making: What Writing a Novel Has Taught Me About Myself

By Peggy Arthur

I’ve spent nearly a decade writing, editing, rewriting, and starting over. Honestly, I’ve lost track. Year 9? Year 10? At this point, time feels like a blur stitched together by pages, paragraphs, and characters who refuse to be quiet.

But here’s what I do know: this year, I’ve accomplished more than in all the years before it. Something shifted. The words are flowing. The chapters feel fuller. It’s as if the book is finally writing me as much as I’m writing it. At last, I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Writing Is a Psychological Journey

Writing a novel isn’t just a creative endeavor, it’s a psychological experiment. One that tests your confidence, your identity, and your ability to sit with doubt.

Some days it feels like an excavation. Other days, like striking a rock against a wall just to spark a fire. Honestly? Sinking into quicksand might sound more fun.

If there’s a version of hell for creatives, maybe it’s a blinking cursor paired with a deadline that won’t stop shifting. To escape the curse of the cursor, I immersed myself in the writing community. I joined the Atlanta Writers Club and made a commitment to take my work seriously. To believe in myself and breathe that belief into my words. To invest in myself, share my work, and expand it.

The Product Is the Process

Despite the stops and starts, I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Because on the other side of the doubt and drafts, you’re left with something sacred. A product but more importantly, a process.

One that transforms you. One that teaches you who you are. One that clarifies what you believe and reveals how far you’re willing to go to bring something honest into the world.

For me, this journey has been everything: amazing, difficult, surprising, and humbling. And now, finally, the story is taking shape in a way that feels aligned and alive.

Let’s Talk: Where Are You in Your Journey?

Have you ever worked on something for years and finally felt it click?
Are you in the middle of your own creative process right now?

I’d love to hear where you are. Are you outlining your first novel? Wrestling with revisions? Maybe you’re struggling to believe in your idea again.

And if this resonated with you, consider sharing it with someone who might need a little encouragement today. Keep going. The work matters. And so do you.
