Meet Hemi: A Woman Caught Between Worlds

By Peggy Arthur

When grief becomes a xgatewayand pain becomes a sortal

Greetings!

Some characters arrive with a whisper.

Hemi showed up with a storm.

She is not a hero in the traditional sense. There are no swords or clear victories in her story. What she carries is heavier. Older. Passed down through generations of silence and survival.

Hemi is a woman haunted by memory and pulled by a future she doesn’t yet understand. Raised in the shadows of grief, she moves through life guarded, practical, careful not to want too much. But after her grandmother’s sudden death, something in Hemi begins to crack open. What spills out isn’t just sorrow—it’s calling.

She doesn’t know it yet, but the death was a door.
And behind it, an ancestral world is waiting. Watching. Testing.

When Grief Becomes a Gateway

Hemi lives in a world that looks like ours but beneath the surface, something ancient is stirring. She drinks more. She isolates. She dreams of her grandmother’s voice, and sometimes, she thinks she hears it for real.

This is what happens when grief becomes a gateway and pain becomes a portal.

Is it madness?
Grief?
Or the beginning of something sacred?

The Weight of Being Chosen

As the walls between past and present begin to thin, Hemi must face the question that terrifies her most:
What if the life you’ve been living isn’t the one you were meant for?

Why I Wrote Hemi

Hemi came to me out of the blue, fully grown like Athena emerging from Zeus’s head. She’s part mystery, part memory. She’s the light to the shadow.

Her journey is rooted in the South, but her questions are universal:

What does it mean to carry legacy in your blood?
How do you heal when the pain is older than your body?
And who are you when the stories no longer match the person you’ve become?

A Note to the Reader

If you’ve ever felt caught between two versions of yourself…
If you’ve ever grieved someone so deeply you thought, you’d disappear too…
If you’ve ever wondered if the dead are still watching…still guiding…
then Hemi’s story might be for you.

The Pretender’s Game is not just a fantasy.
It’s a reckoning. A spiritual unearthing. A myth reborn.
And Hemi is the first voice in that long ancestral call.

Stay Tuned…

I’ll be sharing more about the characters, symbols, and spiritual systems that shape Hemi’s journey. But for now, just know this:

The circle is opening.
And Hemi is about to step inside.

Hemi’s story is personal, yet it echoes something many of us carry.

Have you ever felt like you were living someone else’s story?
Have you ever lost someone and felt like their voice lingered in the air around you?
Do you believe pain can be a portal—a beginning, not just an end?

Maybe you’ve stood at your own kind of threshold between who you were and who you’re becoming.
If so, I’d love to hear from you.
